Investigating Electromagnets Essay When a current passed through a wire it causes the wire to have a magnetic field. If the wire is coiled it behaves like a bar magnet. The stronger the magnet the further the field lines reach. If you place an iron core in the coil of wire the magnet becomes stronger. Hypothesis: I think that if I pass current through a coil of wire, the coil of wire will become a magnet. I think this because the electrons are flowing through the wire and this causes the wire to become magnetic. I predict that if you increase the voltage, the magnets strength will increase and the magnetic field will get bigger, this is because Ohms law = V=IR, so if you increase the voltage, the current will increase. If the coil of wire has a resistance of 1 ohm and you pass volts through the wire, the wire will have a current of 6 amps. The second method that I predict which would affect the strength, is to place the coil around the nail. Also, if you increase the number of coils around the nail, this will also increase the strength of the magnet. The magnet can affect the randomly arranged domains by arranging the domains in line. The stronger the magnet, the more domains will be affected and put in line making the iron a magnet. I also predict that if I double the current the magnetic field will double. i. e. The strength of the magnet will be directly proportional to the current. Method: Equipment: Power pack, compass, wire (for coil), nail (iron), ammeter, 2 crocodile clips, ruler, extended wires. Diagram:   Set up the equipment as shown above. Make sure the equipment is set up correctly and there is the right amount of coils on the piece of copper. Also make sure everything is working.   Place the compass about a metre away from the coils.   Turn the power supply on and increase the voltage until the ammeter reads 0. 1 Amps. Move the compass towards the coil of wire. Use your finger to do this. When the compass moves or makes a sudden turn stop applying force to it. Then measure the distance between the coil of wire and the compass. Record the result and repeat this 3 times. After you have repeated this 3 times you change the current to 0. 2 Amps.   You then do the same process for what you did for 0. 1 Amps, this makes the test fair. Results table: Size of the field (mm) Test number Current (Amperes, A) Conclusion: My results support part of hypothesis. In my hypothesis I said that if I increase the current the magnetic field will increase, this is shown on my results table. The second part where my results support my hypothesis is that when a current passes through a coil of wire, it will become a magnet and when the current is stopped the coil of wire will become non-magnetic. Some parts of my results dont support my hypothesis, as I predicted that if I double the current the magnetic field would double. From my graph I can see at 0. 1 amps the field is 35, so if I were to double this I would get 70 but for 0. 2 amps I got 67. 33, so from this you can see that if I double the current the magnetic field does not double. The current is directly proportional to the magnetic field because it is a straight line. Evaluation: My results are reliable because I used the same equipment throughout the experiment. I also repeated my method 3 times, so I could get a fair average. I also made sure I kept the same number of coils of wire throughout the experiment. I also did the experiment in one day, therefore the room temperature was the same. These are the reasons why my test was a fair test; therefore the results I got were reliable. There was a problem when I did the test. The problem is, when the current and resistance get too high, the circuit gets hot and then trips out. This can affect the results because when the circuit gets too hot, and the resistance gets higher, the current or p. d. that is passing through, will be less than what it should be, therefore the magnetic field will be smaller than what it should be, because of this the results will be different. To solve this problem we might have to use thicker wire. We could also use shorter wire, Doing these would make the results more accurate. Another way we could solve the problem could be to let it cool down after it trips out. Another problem when doing this experiment is that the compass could be affected by the other groups magnetic field, this is because everyone was working at the same time. A way to solve this problem could be, to do the experiment at different times, like one after the other. Or you could do it in different rooms.

If you dont know where you are, you are no where :: Response Essays

Topic: A former president of the National Geographic Society once said, "If you don't know where you are, you are no where." Do you agree or disagree? I agree because I find that this quote is true. People who live day by day doing nothing, whether if it's hanging outside with friends in the street during school hours or late hours of the night, or attending school just for attendance, but sitting in class wasting time, going to work and not even doing a good job or the full work it requires are examples of people who are in comfort zones, a place where you are stuck in denial. I'll explain it for better understanding of what I mean. What if you're someone who doesn't feel much peer pressure and, in fact, doesn't feel much pressure to do anything at all? It can be just as bad, however, to go far in the other direction and become a total slug. You see, we also live in denial when we fail to admit to ourselves that we are not living up to our potential and are not creating something significant for our lives, so it is a bit similar when saying that if you don't know know where you are, you are no where because if you can't see what you are doing, you won't succeed. What I mean is that you stop reaching for a higher level of achievement and accomplishment and pretend that your life is okay. You get up, brush your happy hair, throw on some clothes, drag yourself out of your house, and go through the motions of your day. You think you're comfortable, but you're not as happy as you could be. You're in what I call a "comfort zone" and you pretend that it's okay, so you accomlish nothing to take you to higher goals, to make you go somewhere in life, and you end up going no where, and when you look back at everything you've been doing for so long, you don't feel so good about it as the way you thought you would because you have nothing to show for it, especially if you really don't know where you are going in life because life only rewards action and those who know what they want and have goals to achieve are going to get somewhere. Optimism in The Grapes of Wrath Essay

At the end of the novel The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, it seems as though the Joads have nothing left to live for, however Steinbeck shows signs of optimism through symbols and biblical allusions. The Joads have gone through tremendous hardships throughout their entire trip to California to find work. They have lost several family members, have gone without work and lived on extremely low rations for months. At the height of their struggles, the Joads are without food, shelter, and their strongest member Tom Joad. The daughter, Rose of Sharon also delivers a stillborn baby. Steinbeck does however end the story with symbols of hope. The rain, which is constantly pouring down, is a symbol of renewal. The rain represents the coming of spring and plants. The rain has made A[t]iny points of grass came through the earth@ and Athe hills were pale green with the beginning year@(592), enabling for new crops to grow and for families to find work. Rose of Sharon=s stillborn baby is also a symbol of optimism. Uncle John is told to bury the baby after it is delivered. Instead Uncle John decides to float the baby down a river in its coffin. Through this action, Steinbeck alludes to Moses, who was also sent down a river as a baby, and later freed his people from slavery and brought them to Isreal. As Uncle John puts the stillborn baby into the river, he tells it to AGo down an= tell =em. Go down in the street an= rot an= tell =em that way@(609). Uncle John is telling the baby to show the rich landowners what their greediness has done. Uncle John sends the baby down as a symbol of the great suffering the have-nots have been through, saying, Amaybe they=ll know then@(609). The last  symbol of optimism comes when Rose of Sharon nurses a dying man. The man has been deprived of food for six days and is not able to digest solid foods. Rose of Sharon, after just delivering a stillborn baby, understands the situation and lets the man drink her milk. This action shows the tremendous growth Rose of Sharon has gone through as a person and ends the novel with optimistic gestures of generosity and unselfishness.

Eradication of Sociocultural Barriers in Underpriviledged...

Murray (1999) in his study cited that the American Psychological Association’s 1999 Annual Convention was conducted in order to highlight the fact that it is very important to understand and eradicate socio-cultural differences in underprivileged countries for providing children a healthy environment for grooming their personalities. The convention concluded that discrimination, stereotypes and abuse are some of the negative outcomes of socio-cultural differences. There are evident cultural differences in parenting among different states of Nigeria. Many case studies have concluded the fact that every state has different literacy rate. Moreover, the religion practiced by majority of people in every state is also different. This is the reason that it is very difficult to analyze methods of parenting in Nigeria.
